چکیده

We describe a study which examined the relationship between certain textual/discursive cues during computer-mediated dialogues and correlations of these cues with two measures of impression formation: 1. A Global Positivity of Impressions questionnaire, and 2. Perceptions of six personality dimensions. This study also examined discourse phenomena emergent in the conversations. Undergraduates participated in same and mixed-sex dyadic, forced turn, computer-mediated dialogues and were asked to report impressions of t heir conversational partners. Results indicated that relative amounts of words-per-turn, negative disclosure, and evaluative disclosure have significant effects on impression formation. Results also suggest that number of words-per-turn, number of questions, and evaluative disclosure are emergent in the discourse, and naturally equalize between partners. No gender differences were detected. These findings suggest a new methodology for examining online interaction and concomitant impression formation. Suggestions are made for how this new methodology might be incorporated into autonomous conversational systems.

Selecting and Extracting Effective Features of SSVEP-based Brain-Computer Interface

User interfaces are always one of the most important applied and study fields of information technology. The development and expansion of cognitive science studies and functionalization of its tools such as BCI1, as well as popularization of methods such as SSVEP2 to stimulate brain waves, have led to using these techniques every day, especially in appropriate solutions for physically and menta...

Improving habitability of natural language interfaces for querying ontologies with feedback and clarification dialogues

Natural Language Interfaces (NLIs) are a viable, human-readable alternative to complex, formal query languages like SPARQL, which are typically used for accessing semantically structured data (e.g. RDF and OWL repositories). However, in order to cope with natural language ambiguities, NLIs typically support a more restricted language. A major challenge when designing such restricted languages i...

A Dialogue Grammar for the Cars Database

We describe an empirically based approach tothe computational management of dialogues. Language Evolution and Human-Computer Interaction

Many of the issues that confront designers of interactive computer systems also appear in natural language evolution. Natural languages and human-computer interfaces share as their primary mission the support of extended “dialogues” between responsive entities. Because in each case one participant is a human being, some of the pressures operating on natural languages, causing them to evolve in ...
